Buying loose diamonds online in the UK
A loose diamond is a diamond that has not yet been set in jewellery. Choosing the stone first, and the setting second, is the way most jewellers have always worked: it lets you put your budget where it shows, compare stones side by side and know exactly what you are paying for. Every diamond in our search is listed with its grading report, its measurements and its price in pounds, and many have a 360° video so you can see the stone before you buy.
When you find the one, you can buy it loose with its certificate, usually delivered in 7 to 10 days, or choose Add Jewellery and we will set it in an engagement ring, earrings or a pendant, made to order in our workshop in Bourton-on-the-Water and hallmarked in the UK.
Shop loose diamonds by shape
Shape is the first choice most people make. Each shape page explains how to choose that cut and lists every stone we can supply in it:
Round brilliant cut diamondsThe most sparkle of any shape
Oval cut diamondsLooks larger for its weight
Princess cut diamondsA crisp, square brilliant
Emerald cut diamondsLong, clean flashes of light
Cushion cut diamondsSoft corners, romantic look
Radiant cut diamondsTrimmed corners, brilliant sparkle
Pear shaped diamondsAn elegant teardrop
Marquise diamondsThe largest look for its weight
Asscher cut diamondsA square, Art Deco step cut
Heart shaped diamondsRomantic, for rings and pendants
Cushion and radiant diamonds also come in square cushion, elongated cushion, square radiant and elongated radiant shapes.
Natural or lab grown?
Both are real diamonds: pure carbon, with the same hardness, sparkle and chemical make-up, and graded on the same kind of certificate. A natural diamond formed deep in the earth over billions of years and holds its rarity. A lab grown diamond is grown in weeks and costs a fraction of the price for the same size and quality, so many couples choose a larger stone for the same budget. For colour, browse coloured natural diamonds or coloured lab grown diamonds in pink, blue, yellow and more.

How to choose a loose diamond: the 4Cs
Cut
Cut decides how well a diamond returns light, and it has the biggest effect on how bright it looks. Round diamonds carry a cut grade on the certificate: choose Excellent or Ideal where you can. For other shapes, look at the proportions, polish and symmetry, and use the video.
Colour
White diamonds are graded from D (colourless) down the alphabet. G and H look white once set, especially in platinum or white gold, and give good value. In yellow or rose gold, I and J can look lovely too.
Clarity
Clarity grades the tiny natural features inside a diamond. VS2 and SI1 stones are usually clean to the eye, so you rarely need to pay for VVS or flawless unless you want to. Step cuts such as emerald and Asscher show more, so aim a grade higher for those.
Carat
Carat is weight, not size. Prices jump at the round numbers, so a 0.90 or 1.40 carat stone can look almost identical to a 1.00 or 1.50 and cost noticeably less. Browse by size: 1 carat, 1.5 carat, 2 carat and 3 carat natural diamonds, or 1 carat and 2 carat lab grown diamonds.
Certified diamonds you can check
Every diamond we list is independently graded, most by GIA or IGI, and the certificate is linked on each stone so you can check the report number on the laboratory's own website. The grades you see in our search come straight from that report.
Why buy a loose diamond from Comparethediamond.com?
We are a family jeweller, trading since 1969 and members of the National Association of Jewellers. Our search shows live stock with prices in pounds, and our team will happily look at any stone for you and tell you honestly what we think of it. If you want it set, we make the jewellery ourselves: start with our engagement rings, build a ring in 3D with Ring Maker, or ask us to design something bespoke around your diamond.
Loose Diamonds: your questions answered
What is a loose diamond?
A loose diamond is one that has not been set in jewellery yet. Buying the stone on its own lets you choose its exact shape, size and grades, then decide on the setting.
Is it cheaper to buy a loose diamond?
Usually you get better value, because you choose exactly where your budget goes and pay for the stone you see rather than one picked for a finished ring. You can then set it in any design you like.
Can I buy a loose diamond and have it set later?
Yes. Buy the diamond loose with its certificate and come back when you are ready, or choose Add Jewellery on any stone and we will make a ring, earrings or a pendant around it in our workshop.
How long does delivery take for a loose diamond?
A loose diamond is usually delivered in 7 to 10 days. If you have it set in jewellery, we make the piece to order in our workshop, and the product page shows the delivery estimate.
Are your loose diamonds certified?
Yes. Every diamond is independently graded, most by GIA or IGI, and the certificate is linked on each stone so you can check it on the laboratory's website.
Should I choose a natural or lab grown diamond?
Both are real diamonds with the same sparkle and hardness. A natural diamond is rarer; a lab grown diamond costs much less for the same size and grades. It comes down to budget and what matters to you.
Which diamond shape looks biggest for its weight?
Marquise, oval and pear shapes look the largest for their carat weight because they are long and shallow. A round brilliant gives the most sparkle; an emerald or Asscher cut gives a calmer, step-cut look.
What colour and clarity should I choose?
For most people, G or H colour and VS2 or SI1 clarity look white and clean to the eye once set, and give the best value. Our team can check any stone for you before you buy.
Can I see a diamond before I buy it?
Many stones have a 360° video on their page, and every one has its certificate. If you would like a closer look or a second opinion, message us on WhatsApp or book a free virtual consultation.
