What is a radiant cut diamond?
The radiant was introduced in 1977 as the first shape to combine a straight-edged, cut-cornered outline with full brilliant faceting. It sparkles almost as much as a round, but has the clean lines of an emerald cut, and its trimmed corners make it hard-wearing. Radiants come as square radiants, up to a 1.08 ratio, and elongated radiants, from 1.15. This page shows every radiant, including those in between.
How to choose a radiant cut diamond
Square or rectangular
Square radiants look bold and modern; elongated radiants look larger for their weight and slim the finger. Use the shape filter above to see only one or the other.
Color and clarity
The brilliant faceting hides inclusions well, so VS2 or SI1 is usually clean to the eye. Radiants can hold a little color, so G or H is a good choice in white metal; they are also one of the best shapes for showing off a fancy colored diamond.
Radiant vs emerald and cushion
An emerald cut has the same outline but step facets, giving calm flashes of light. A cushion has rounded corners and a vintage feel. The radiant is the brightest of the three.
Popular Radiant Cut diamond sizes
Most of our customers choose between 1 and 3 carats. Start with one of these sizes, or use the carat filter above for anything else:
- 1 carat radiant cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 1.5 carat radiant cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 2 carat radiant cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 3 carat radiant cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 5 carat radiant cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
Setting your radiant cut diamond
The cut corners protect a radiant from chipping, so it suits four claws, a halo or side stones. Every ring is made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK. Browse our radiant cut engagement rings, or design your own around the diamond you choose here.
You can also build a ring in 3D with Ring Maker, starting with a radiant cut diamond, or see the shape in radiant cut diamond earrings and radiant cut diamond pendants.
Radiant Cut Diamonds: your questions answered
What is the difference between a radiant and an emerald cut?
They share a cut-cornered outline, but a radiant has brilliant facets and lots of sparkle, while an emerald cut has long step facets and calmer flashes of light.
Are radiant cut diamonds durable?
Yes. The trimmed corners remove the sharp points found on a princess cut, so a radiant is less likely to chip.
What is the difference between a square and an elongated radiant?
The length-to-width ratio. A square radiant is up to 1.08; an elongated radiant is 1.15 or more. Stones in between appear on this page.
Do radiant cut diamonds hide inclusions?
Yes. Their brilliant faceting breaks up light and makes small inclusions harder to see, so VS2 or SI1 is usually clean to the eye.
Can I buy a loose radiant cut diamond?
Yes. Every diamond on this page can be bought loose, with its grading certificate: choose Buy the Diamond on the stone you like, and it is usually delivered in 7 to 10 days. Or choose Add Jewelry to have it set in a ring, earrings or a pendant, made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK.
