What is an oval cut diamond?
An oval is a brilliant cut diamond stretched into an elongated outline. It has a similar number of facets to a round, so it sparkles almost as much, but because it is longer it shows more surface area from above. An oval looks around 10% larger than a round of the same carat weight, and it usually costs less, which is why it has become one of the most popular engagement ring shapes.
How to choose an oval diamond
Length-to-width ratio
The ratio is the diamond's length divided by its width, shown on the certificate measurements. Between 1.30 and 1.50 gives the classic oval look; below 1.30 is fuller and rounder, above 1.50 is long and slender. It is a matter of taste, so choose what you like the look of.
The bow-tie
Most ovals show a darker area across the middle, shaped like a bow-tie, where light passes through rather than reflecting back. A soft bow-tie is normal and adds contrast; a strong one makes the center look dark. Real photos and videos on each stone help you check, and we are happy to look at any diamond for you.
Color and clarity
Color can show slightly at the ends of an oval, so G or H is a good choice for a white look. VS2 or SI1 clarity is usually clean to the eye.
Oval vs pear and marquise
All three are elongated brilliant cuts. The oval is the softest and most classic; a pear has one pointed end; a marquise has two and gives the longest look for its weight.
Popular Oval diamond sizes
Most of our customers choose between 1 and 3 carats. Start with one of these sizes, or use the carat filter above for anything else:
- 1 carat oval diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 1.5 carat oval diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 2 carat oval diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 3 carat oval diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 5 carat oval diamonds: natural or lab grown
Setting your oval diamond
An oval looks lovely in four or six claws, a halo or with side stones, and can be set north to south or east to west. Every ring is made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK. Browse our oval engagement rings, or design your own around the diamond you choose here.
You can also build a ring in 3D with Ring Maker, starting with an oval diamond, or see the shape in oval diamond earrings and oval diamond pendants.
Oval Cut Diamonds: your questions answered
Does an oval diamond look bigger than a round?
Yes. An oval shows around 10% more surface area from above than a round of the same carat weight, so it looks larger on the hand.
What is the best ratio for an oval diamond?
Between 1.30 and 1.50 is the most popular range. Lower ratios look fuller and rounder; higher ratios look longer and more slender.
What is the bow-tie effect in an oval diamond?
A darker band across the middle of the stone where light passes through instead of reflecting back. A faint bow-tie is normal; a strong one makes the center look dark, so check photos or ask us to look.
Are oval diamonds cheaper than round diamonds?
Usually, yes. Less rough diamond is lost in cutting, so an oval of the same color, clarity and carat weight typically costs less than a round.
Can I buy a loose oval diamond?
Yes. Every diamond on this page can be bought loose, with its grading certificate: choose Buy the Diamond on the stone you like, and it is usually delivered in 7 to 10 days. Or choose Add Jewelry to have it set in a ring, earrings or a pendant, made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK.
