What is a princess cut diamond?
A princess cut is a square diamond with pointed corners and a pyramid of brilliant facets underneath, developed in the 1980s. It is the second most popular shape for engagement rings after the round. Because a square crystal can be cut with little waste, a princess cut usually costs noticeably less per carat than a round of the same grades.
How to choose a princess cut diamond
Look for a square outline
Most people want a princess cut that looks square, so choose a length-to-width ratio between 1.00 and 1.05. Up to about 1.08 still reads as square; beyond that the stone starts to look rectangular.
Color and clarity
The brilliant faceting hides small inclusions well, so VS2 or SI1 is usually clean to the eye. Color can gather slightly in the corners, so G or H is a good choice for a white look in platinum or white gold.
Princess vs cushion diamonds
Both can be square. A princess cut has sharp corners and a bright, modern look; a cushion has rounded corners and a softer, more vintage feel. If you prefer a square stone with less sparkle and more clarity on show, look at an Asscher cut instead.
Popular Princess Cut diamond sizes
Most of our customers choose between 1 and 3 carats. Start with one of these sizes, or use the carat filter above for anything else:
- 1 carat princess cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 1.5 carat princess cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 2 carat princess cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 3 carat princess cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 5 carat princess cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
Setting your princess cut diamond
The sharp corners are the most exposed part of a princess cut, so we hold each corner with a V-shaped claw to protect it. Every ring is made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK. Browse our princess cut engagement rings, or design your own around the diamond you choose here.
You can also build a ring in 3D with Ring Maker, starting with a princess cut diamond, or see the shape in princess cut diamond earrings and princess cut diamond pendants.
Princess Cut Diamonds: your questions answered
Are princess cut diamonds cheaper than round diamonds?
Usually, yes. Less of the rough diamond is lost when cutting a princess, so the price per carat is typically lower than a round with the same color, clarity and carat weight.
Do princess cut diamonds chip easily?
The pointed corners are the weakest point of the shape. Setting each corner in a V-shaped claw protects them well, and that is how we set every princess cut diamond.
What ratio should a princess cut diamond have?
For a square look, choose between 1.00 and 1.05. Stones up to about 1.08 still look square to most people.
Does a princess cut diamond look bigger than a round?
Measured across, a princess cut is slightly smaller than a round of the same weight, but its corners make it look larger along the diagonal. In a ring, most people see them as similar in size.
Can I buy a loose princess cut diamond?
Yes. Every diamond on this page can be bought loose, with its grading certificate: choose Buy the Diamond on the stone you like, and it is usually delivered in 7 to 10 days. Or choose Add Jewelry to have it set in a ring, earrings or a pendant, made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK.
