What is a heart shaped diamond?
A heart shape is a modified brilliant cut with a cleft at the top and a point at the bottom. It is one of the most skilled shapes to cut well, because both halves must mirror each other exactly for the heart to read clearly. It is a popular choice for pendants and for engagement rings with a romantic, personal feel.
How to choose a heart shaped diamond
Size matters for the shape
In very small stones the outline is hard to see, especially once set. We suggest 0.50 carat or more, and 1 carat or more for an engagement ring center stone.
Symmetry and ratio
Look for two evenly rounded lobes, a clear cleft and a straight, centered point. A length-to-width ratio between 0.90 and 1.10 gives a balanced heart; check the photo to be sure the shape suits you.
Color and clarity
Color can show at the point, so G or H is a good choice in white metal. VS2 or SI1 is usually clean to the eye.
Heart shaped vs pear diamonds
A pear has one rounded end; a heart has two lobes and a cleft. If you like the romance of a heart but want something more understated, a pear is a lovely alternative.
