What is a cushion cut diamond?
The cushion cut descends from the old mine cut of the 1800s, so it has a romantic, vintage character. It has curved sides, rounded corners and large brilliant facets that give broad flashes of light and strong fire. Cushions come in two looks: square cushions, with a length-to-width ratio up to 1.08, and elongated cushions, from 1.15 upwards. This page shows every cushion, including those in between.
How to choose a cushion cut diamond
Square or elongated
Square cushions are the classic choice and look balanced in a halo. Elongated cushions look larger for their weight and lengthen the look of the finger. Use the shape filter above to see only one or the other.
Faceting style
Some cushions have larger, chunkier facets for a classic look; others, sometimes called crushed ice, have many small facets for a busier sparkle. The certificate does not grade this, so the real photo on each stone is the best guide.
Color and clarity
Cushions can show a little more color than rounds, so G or H is a good choice in white metal. VS2 or SI1 clarity is usually clean to the eye.
Cushion vs radiant diamonds
Both come in square and elongated shapes. A cushion has rounded corners and a softer, vintage feel; a radiant has trimmed straight corners and a crisper, more modern sparkle.

Cushion Cut Diamonds: your questions answered
What is the difference between a square and an elongated cushion?
It is the length-to-width ratio. A square cushion is up to 1.08, so it looks square; an elongated cushion is 1.15 or more, so it looks rectangular. Stones in between appear on this page.
Are cushion cut diamonds cheaper than round diamonds?
Usually, yes. A cushion of the same color, clarity and carat weight typically costs less than a round brilliant.
Do cushion cut diamonds sparkle?
Yes. Cushions have strong fire, the rainbow flashes of color, and broad flashes of white light, giving a warmer sparkle than a round brilliant.
What color should a cushion cut diamond be?
G or H looks white in platinum or white gold. Cushions can show a touch more color than rounds, so we would not go much below H in white metal.
