What is a pear shaped diamond?
A pear, or teardrop, is a brilliant cut with one rounded end and one point. It brings together the sparkle of a round brilliant and the length of a marquise, so it looks larger than a round of the same weight and slims the look of the finger. In a ring it is usually worn with the point towards the fingertip.
How to choose a pear shaped diamond
Length-to-width ratio
Between 1.45 and 1.75 gives the classic teardrop. Lower ratios look fuller and wider; higher ratios look long and slim.
Symmetry
The point should line up with the centre of the rounded end, and the two sides should curve evenly. A good symmetry grade and a look at the photo are the best checks. Most pears show a soft bow-tie across the middle, which is normal.
Colour and clarity
Colour can gather at the point, so G or H is a good choice in white metal. VS2 or SI1 is usually clean to the eye; avoid inclusions near the tip.
Pear vs oval diamonds
Both are elongated brilliant cuts that look larger for their weight. The oval is softer and more classic; the pear is more distinctive, and its point draws the eye along the finger.
Popular Pear Shape diamond sizes
Most of our customers choose between 1 and 3 carats. Start with one of these sizes, or use the carat filter above for anything else:
- 1 carat pear shape diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 1.5 carat pear shape diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 2 carat pear shape diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 3 carat pear shape diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 5 carat pear shape diamonds: natural or lab grown
Setting your pear shape diamond
We protect the point of a pear with a V-shaped claw. It suits a solitaire, a halo that follows the teardrop outline, or a pendant. Every ring is made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK. Browse our pear shaped engagement rings, or design your own around the diamond you choose here.
You can also build a ring in 3D with Ring Maker, starting with a pear shaped diamond, or see the shape in pear shaped diamond earrings and pear shaped diamond pendants.
Pear Shaped Diamonds: your questions answered
Which way should a pear shaped diamond face in a ring?
Traditionally the point faces the fingertip, which lengthens the look of the finger. It is your choice, and we can set it either way.
What ratio should a pear shaped diamond have?
Between 1.45 and 1.75 is the classic range. Lower looks fuller; higher looks longer and slimmer.
Does a pear shaped diamond look bigger than a round?
Yes. Its elongated outline shows more of the stone from above, so it looks larger than a round of the same carat weight.
Is the point of a pear diamond fragile?
The point is the most exposed part, so we hold it in a V-shaped claw to protect it from knocks.
Can I buy a loose pear shaped diamond?
Yes. Every diamond on this page can be bought loose, with its grading certificate: choose Buy the Diamond on the stone you like, and it is usually delivered in 7 to 10 days. Or choose Add Jewellery to have it set in a ring, earrings or a pendant, made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK.
