What is an Asscher cut diamond?
The Asscher cut was created by Joseph Asscher in Amsterdam in 1902. It is a square step cut with large cut corners, which give it an octagonal outline, and rows of facets that draw the eye to the centre in a pattern often compared to a windmill or a hall of mirrors. It was a favourite of the Art Deco era and suits vintage-style rings particularly well.
How to choose an Asscher cut diamond
Clarity and colour
Like the emerald cut, an Asscher's open facets show the inside of the stone clearly, so we suggest VS2 or better. Step cuts also show body colour more than brilliant cuts, so G or better looks crisp and white.
A square outline
Choose a length-to-width ratio between 1.00 and 1.05 for a true square. Look for even, clearly defined steps in the photo; well cut Asschers show a crisp pattern of concentric squares.
Asscher vs emerald and princess
An Asscher is essentially a square emerald cut, with deeper corners. Compared with a princess cut, also square, it trades sparkle for clarity and a calmer, vintage look.
Popular Asscher Cut diamond sizes
Most of our customers choose between 1 and 3 carats. Start with one of these sizes, or use the carat filter above for anything else:
- 1 carat asscher cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 1.5 carat asscher cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 2 carat asscher cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 3 carat asscher cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 5 carat asscher cut diamonds: natural or lab grown
Setting your asscher cut diamond
An Asscher is usually held in four claws at the corners and looks striking with baguette side stones or a vintage-style halo. Every ring is made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK. Browse our asscher cut engagement rings, or design your own around the diamond you choose here.
You can also build a ring in 3D with Ring Maker, starting with an asscher cut diamond, or see the shape in asscher cut diamond earrings and asscher cut diamond pendants.
Asscher Cut Diamonds: your questions answered
Who invented the Asscher cut?
Joseph Asscher of the Asscher Diamond Company in Amsterdam, in 1902. It became one of the signature shapes of the Art Deco period.
What is the difference between an Asscher and an emerald cut?
Both are step cuts. An Asscher is square with deeper corners; an emerald cut is rectangular.
What clarity should an Asscher cut diamond have?
VS2 or better is a safe choice, because the large, open facets make inclusions easier to see than in a brilliant cut.
Does an Asscher cut diamond sparkle?
It gives large, slower flashes of light rather than many small sparkles, with a clear, glassy look that many people love.
Can I buy a loose Asscher cut diamond?
Yes. Every diamond on this page can be bought loose, with its grading certificate: choose Buy the Diamond on the stone you like, and it is usually delivered in 7 to 10 days. Or choose Add Jewellery to have it set in a ring, earrings or a pendant, made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK.
